The needs of the many have been heard as CBS has announced they are planning on launching a brand new Star Trek series for television in January of 2017. Alex Kurtzman, co-writer and producer of rebooted films Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), has been tapped to be an executive producer of the new series.
The new series has yet to be titled and will feature a brand new set of characters that will carry on the familiar mission of exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations, and boldly going where no man has gone before. CBS’s Star Trek series will also not have any ties to the Paramount Pictures film Star Trek Beyond, releasing in July of 2016.
CBS plans to develop the television series exclusively for the United States on CBS All Access, their live streaming and digital video on demand service. Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Digital Media stated:
This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before – directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access. We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series
CBS All Access is $5.99 per month, not including taxes, and offers more than 7,500 episodes for streaming on demand. From NCIS to The Big Bang Theory and Frasier, CBS All Access is available to stream over Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, Android TV, and through the CBS app on Android, iOS, and Windows 10.
