Picking the best smartphones of 2015 is a dangerous thing to do because people will always have varying opinions and there’s bound to be spirited discussion surrounding an article such as this. I guess you can say that for just about any “best of” list really. But here we are, doing it anyway. Here’s our picks for best smartphones 2015.
5. Nexus 5X
The Nexus 5 was one of Google and LG’s best ever Nexus devices, easily beating all other previous Nexus devices by a wide margin. This year Google and LG teamed up on another Nexus device and they brought the same winning formula with it. With some updated specs and new tech, like a fingerprint scanner, the 5X is one of two Nexi devices and starts at a reasonable $329 unlocked.
4. Moto X Pure
Continuing on with the success of the Moto X series and coming off a good run with the Nexus 6, the Moto X Pure is a solid phone with useful software. The Moto X Pure is one of the few smartphones that will get you as near to a pure Android software experience. Motorola also gives the best customization experience with Moto Maker. We gave the Moto X Pure high marks in our review and it lands safely in at #4 on our list.Purchase Moto X Pure
3. Lumia 950
The Lumia 950 landing in at #3 may raise some eyebrows and likely garner some vocal opposition. The fact is, Windows Phone is a really great operating system and I’ve been testing the 950 over the past week and the hardware is amazing. The real problem with Windows Phone isn’t the hardware or the software, rather it’s Google. Google has managed to hook a large majority of users into Google services yet they don’t allow Microsoft access to the API’s to those services to use on Windows Phone. Google does allow Apple access to these API’s and Google works wonderfully on iOS but Windows Phone users don’t have that luxury. But, just because you can’t use Google’s services as elegantly as you can on iOS or Android doesn’t mean it can’t be done. We’ll have a full review in January, for now I felt this phone deserved to be on the list.
EDIT: One of our readers pointed out some facts concerning Google and API’s, you can read his comments on our Google+ share. We will research and include this information in our full review of the 950.Purchase Lumia 950
2. iPhone 6s Plus
While the iPhone design could be better Apple’s new features like Force Touch and a faster fingerprint sensor land it in the #2 slot. Apple still has some of the best app developers on its platform and the app ecosystem is mature and vibrant. In our review we did have some initial software problems which were resolved shortly after the review was written. Yes the Moto X Pure scored higher but the iPhone offers a bit more than the Pure. If you’re invested in the Apple ecosystem the iPhone is a no-brainer.Purchase Apple iPhone 6s Plus
1. Nexus 6P
This is the Nexus you’re looking for. Over the years we’ve seen the Google flagship mature but this year it really found a whole new level of maturity thanks to Huawei. The build quality and feel of the Nexus 6P is above that of the iPhone 6s Plus. Combine that with Android 6.0 which brings tons of improvements and is by far the best Android version yet and you have the Android phone everyone should be looking at. Our review of the 6P scored high marks and nearly got a 5 out 5. Google and Huawei win 2015 with this device and it’s well worth looking at if you’re a first time Android user.Purchase Nexus 6P
