Your car can now park itself! Well, it can if it is a Tesla Model S or a Model X, thanks to a new summon feature.
Tesla has started pushing out the 7.1 to its cars and among other things, it allows cars with the necessary hardware to park and retrieve themselves autonomously. Yep, that oh-so-sweet summon feature of clicking a button and having your car drive itself to you is now a reality.
The release notes say that this feature works upto 39 feet – that is, the car will move a maximum of 39 feet. The car will stop moving if its sensors detect an obstacle. Tesla warns that the new Summon and Autopark features should be used only on flat surfaces and on private property. The car can also park itself into perpendicular parking spots.
The 7.1 update also includes other aspects such as improvements to Autosteer and Autopilot visualisation. Tesla has now added restrictions to Autosteer such that it can no longer be used on residential roads without center dividers. This was something Elon Musk announced a while ago, after a bunch of videos showed up on Youtube of users pushing Autopilot and Autosteer to the limit.
“There’s been some fairly crazy videos on YouTube… this is not good. And we will be putting some additional constraints on when autopilot can be activated to minimize the possibility of people doing crazy things with it.”
– Elon Musk
The updates to the visualiation technology now allow the car to detect the type of vehicle in front of or behind it — whether it’s a car, a truck or a motorcycle. The update also allows the car to maintain its lane better in cases where road markings are faded. Other updates include improvements to collision detection, automatic speed adjustments in cruise control, improved Supercharger information, better trip planning and more.
