By now most internet users are familiar with Speedtest.net and a variety of other internet download speed test tools. These tools are supposed to help you gauge what your internet download and upload speeds are for your ISP. But not everyone has great things to say about some of those tools. Some have accused these sites of working with ISP’s to inflate test results when a user runs their tests. Others have accused the ISP’s directly saying they prioritize traffic when a speedtest is being run so it appears your speeds are more than they actually are. This is why Netflix created Fast.com.
Fast.com is a very clean, uncluttered, and simple to use internet speed tester that gained some fame due to its developer being Netflix. Fast.com works differently than other speedtest sites where they test the upload and download links to partner servers. Netflix has its own server which tests the download speeds as it relates to Netflix’s service, in other words, it tests how well your ISP is providing traffic from Netflix to you.
Now that Fast.com has been out for a bit on desktop, Netflix decided it’s time to build an app for that, so right now you can snag the all new app on the App Store or Google Play Store for free. Since Netflix is measuring the speed your ISP is providing directly to and from its own server, we’re thinking the results are strictly for Netflix and do not necessarily reflect what your ISP is providing for other sites. We are reaching out to Netflix for comment on that matter and will update if we hear back. For now, you can snag the app for iOS and Android and test until your heart’s content.
